COVID-19 Relief Response

Since the first COVID-19 case was reported in India on 30th January 2020, the country has been ravaged by two waves of the pandemic, resulting in nearly 43 million cases and more than 516,000 deaths*.

AIF was among the first organizations to respond and provide immediate support to the most vulnerable communities in India. Over the last year, AIF raised over $44 million and leveraged more than $9.5 million worth of Government assets and resources, to reach 560 districts across 31 States and Union Territories of India with life-saving COVID-19 relief efforts.

The unprecedented rise of the virulent COVID-19 variant in the second wave led to the crippling of medical infrastructure around the country. At this juncture, AIF recognized the need for medical grade oxygen in hospitals and contributed to the efforts of the Government by installing 53 PSA plants, one oxygen pipeline, and distributing 5,414 oxygen concentrators and 550 oxygen cylinders across the regions in need of immediate intervention.

Portable Hospital Units

Augmenting India’s existing healthcare infrastructure to fight COVID-19 and future emergencies, AIF installed 36 innovative portable hospitals consisting of 2,682 beds across 14 States and Union Territories of India. Under the guidance of the Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India, and the funding support from donors, partnering with Modulus Housing, Saraplast and PT Medical Solutions; AIF set up portable hospitals which are durable and can be quickly deployed.

Vaccination Initiative

As a last line of defense against this resurgent virus, AIF’s core strategy ‘The First Million’ initiative ensured vaccination for at least a million most vulnerable and marginalized Indians. Prioritizing equity and inclusiveness, AIF recognized Persons with Disability and Caregivers, Sex Workers, Vulnerable Women, Migrant Workers including Street Vendors and Persons from Tribal Communities, as the five most vulnerable groups in need of immediate intervention.
