I received a professional development grant from the American India Foundation (AIF) as part of my Fellowship. This grant is designed to provide Fellows with exposure to their project-relevant sectors and opportunities for skill enhancement. Using this support, I went ahead with a visit to Stellar Montessori School in Kottakkal, Kerala. The experience was enlightening, offering valuable insights into the Montessori educational system. Discussions with the school’s founder, Mr. Abdul Asis, and direct observations of classroom activities were instrumental in understanding the key principles and features of Montessori education.

Structured Environment with Freedom
The Montessori system offers a unique blend of a structured environment with the freedom for children to choose their learning activities. This balance is crucial as it cultivates a sense of independence and responsibility among students. Walking through the classrooms at Stellar Montessori School, I noticed how children moved freely yet purposefully, selecting activities that resonated with their interests and learning needs.
Learning Through Choices
Central to Montessori education is the concept of learning through choices. By allowing students to select activities aligned with their interests, they engage more deeply in the learning process. This personalized and meaningful educational journey fosters a deeper connection to the material. Observing the children, it was evident how their choices sparked genuine interest and engagement, making learning a joyful and enriching experience.
Focus on Independence and Self-Directed Learning
Montessori education places a strong emphasis on independence and self-directed learning. Students are encouraged to take initiative in their education, which nurtures critical thinking and problem-solving skills essential for lifelong learning. At Stellar Montessori, I saw students confidently working on tasks, seeking guidance only when necessary, and displaying remarkable levels of autonomy.

Play-Based Learning Apparatus
The materials and tools used in Montessori classrooms are specifically designed to facilitate learning through play. This hands-on approach enables children to explore abstract concepts in a concrete and engaging manner. The classrooms were filled with various learning apparatus that made complex ideas accessible and enjoyable for the students.
Importance of Professional Training
A significant aspect highlighted during the visit was the importance of comprehensive professional training for Montessori teachers. While many institutions offer Montessori courses, there is notable variance in the quality of training provided. This underscores the need for standardized and reputable training programs to equip educators with the necessary skills for effective implementation of the Montessori approach. Despite the availability of Montessori training courses, the lack of standardized professional development opportunities poses a challenge. It is crucial to select rigorous training programs to ensure educators are well-prepared to foster the Montessori principles.
Non-Comparative Environment
The Montessori method consciously avoids fostering a competitive environment among students. Instead of traditional exams, the focus is on individual progress and holistic development. This promotes a supportive and collaborative learning atmosphere. The non-comparative approach at Stellar Montessori School was evident in the way students interacted, helping and learning from each other without the pressure of competition.

Student-Centric Learning
Observations at Stellar Montessori School revealed a student-centric learning approach. While students sought guidance from teachers as needed, they also actively engaged in self-directed learning activities. This fostered curiosity and a genuine passion for learning. The environment was conducive to nurturing each child’s unique learning path, ensuring that education was tailored to individual needs and interests.
Emphasis on Practical Life Activities
A notable aspect of Montessori education is the early introduction of practical life activities. These activities, grounded in real-life experiences, not only support skill development but also nurture children’s independence and self-sufficiency from a young age. Activities in practical life include carrying materials, spooning, pouring grains, buttoning, lacing, dusting sweeping etc.
The insights gained from the visit to Stellar Montessori School underscored the effectiveness of the Montessori system in fostering a student-centric, independent, and holistic approach to education. The emphasis on freedom, choice, and experiential learning contributes significantly to a comprehensive educational experience. This approach nurtures not only academic growth but also essential life skills and values among students.
Reflecting on this experience, I am inspired by the potential of Montessori education to transform learning environments. The visit has enriched my understanding and has kindled a passion to establish my own school, one that embodies these Montessori principles and provides a nurturing, student-centric environment. The school also offers teacher training programs in Montessori methods now.

A heartfelt thank you to the American India Foundation for the professional development grant. This opportunity has been invaluable in broadening my perspective and enhancing my capabilities within the education sector. Your support is greatly appreciated.
