Students learn digital storytelling techniques

Team from Tamil film industry explains technical details of making films
With the objective of equipping Corporation school students with the skills to use media tools to narrate stories, a workshop on digital storytelling was organised here on Friday.
It was conducted by the Coimbatore Corporation and American India Foundation (AIF), which was implementing a ‘Digital Equaliser’ programme in Corporation schools.
According to V. Alexander, Regional Coordinator (TN), Digital Equalizer programme, students can use the media tools to express issues of concerns in their community, schools and neighbourhood.
In Digital Story Telling, the students learnt to make documentaries, animations and photo essays to highlight the issues in their schools, villages or the Corporation ward. The resource person for the programme was R. Jeyakumar, an Assistant Director from the Tamil film industry and his team.
They explained the technical details in making short films or documentaries film, procedures behind story writing, character analysis, screen play, angle setting, dialogue writing, editing, background music and cinematography.
The students also took up projects. The topics chosen by students include overcoming issues related to girls, the adverse effects of cell phones, and a story about a differently abled student
S. Smithi, a class IX student from Corporation Girls Higher Secondary, Ramakrishnapuram said they learnt a lot about short film making, camera handling and angle setting and also acting.
“We viewed a couple of short films, which was useful. During the workshop, we also acted and shot some scenes. We learnt how to take long shots, mid shots, short shots and cut shots. It was great experience.”
N. Saravanan, a teacher in the Corporation Higher School North, said that the workshop was a good opportunity to learn technical angles. Around 40 students in classes VI to X participated in the workshop.
They were accompanied by seven teachers from as many schools.
