Highlights: Garrett Pacholl is serving as a Banyan Impact Fellow with the Centre for Environment Education (CEE). For his project, he will develop a national module for training middle school teachers on climate change education. Garrett graduated from the University of Notre Dame, where he studied History, Global Affairs, and Peace Studies. He is deeply interested in questions surrounding lived experiences of climate change, education equity, and gaps between local environmentalism and international negotiations. The pursuit of holistic answers to these issues took him around the world, where he discovered a passion for learning from other cultures. His research on community perceptions of climate reparations in the Philippines contributed to an expert opinion submitted to the Inter-American Court on Human Rights regarding the global climate emergency. Outside of his academic work, he interned with the international charity Peace Direct in London, United Kingdom, where he contributed to research and projects relating to conflicts in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. He also developed an original teaching module with the Commission on Human Rights in Quezon City, Philippines, on the intersection of climate justice and human rights. He attended the annual United Nations Climate Change Conference, COP28, in Dubai and has organized multiple conference and panel events at Notre Dame to elevate conversations on climate justice and peace. Garrett is grateful to be working as a Banyan Impact Fellow this year and looks forward to learning from CEE, all while learning the intricacies of Gujarati cuisine in support of his cooking hobby.
