Sawai Madhopur, a place in the southeastern part of Rajasthan became the backdrop of my pivotal ten-month journey. This once-unfamiliar place approached with nervousness about the entire Fellowship period ahead, evolved into a profound exploration of culture, self, and purpose. As this journey unfolded, my camera became my trusty sidekick preserving fleeting moments that defy simple description. This photo essay is a visual narrative through that time. From the infectious laughter of children who brightened even the most challenging days to the beauty found in the simplest aspects of daily life, each image here tells a story.
Here’s a sneak peek into my journey, one frame at a time, sharing the faces, places, and moments that turned an intimidating Fellowship into an unforgettable chapter of my life.
The unexpected guide

In the early days of my Fellowship, uncertainty clouded my path. Then, I met her – a young girl whose infectious smile, curious eyes and unusual name became the catalyst for my first blog post and, more importantly, my renewed perspective. This encounter, barely two weeks into my stay, became a defining moment. It dawned on me that this Fellowship wasn’t just about what I could offer, but about the profound lessons awaiting me.
The Pink City Sparkles

I visited Jaipur during Diwali, and people weren’t exaggerating when they said this city goes all out for the festival. On Diwali night, I made my way to Nahargarh Fort. The view from above was simply spectacular. The whole city was lit up like a Christmas tree, glittering with countless lights. From up there, you could see every street and building twinkling away. It felt like I was looking down at a sea of stars.
From Kitchen Novice to Confident Cook

Food was a major challenge when I first arrived and ordering in didn’t suit my taste buds. With no dabbawalas in sight and my wallet screaming, I had to learn to cook. Mind you, my culinary skills didn’t extend beyond Maggi noodles and even those were hit-or-miss. The first few weeks were a comedy of errors filled with bland dishes and sabzi resembling abstract art. Gradually, I cracked the code. Cooking transformed from a dreaded chore to my daily zen moment, becoming my unexpected joy and my favorite part of the day. I went from struggling with basic recipes to confidently preparing meals that impressed my colleagues, mirroring my personal growth during the Fellowship.
Golden Fields and Unfulfilled Filmy Dreams

My commute to the field office offers a feast for the eyes, and these vibrant sarson ke khet (mustard fields) are the star attraction. Each time I pass, my inner child starts humming Bollywood tunes. You know the ones – where heroes dramatically run through golden fields, arms wide open. Young me dreamed of recreating those iconic scenes someday. But adult me? Let’s just say my dramatic running days are behind me and I’ll have to settle for being a spectator in this real-life mustard musical. Kya karein, mera bachpan ka sapna adhoora reh gaya, Rifat bi!
Urban Safari: Where Cows Rule and Camels Cameo

Little did I know when I joined the Fellowship, I would become an involuntary cow census tracker. While I expected the occasional camel sighting, turns out cows are the real MVPs of this urban jungle. They’re everywhere: lounging in the middle of the roads, attending impromptu street meetings, even critiquing my fashion choices. It’s like they’re staging a ‘moo-tiny’ against human dominance! Meanwhile, camels saunter by occasionally, like divas making guest appearances. Who knew my Fellowship would involve so much unexpected animal spotting?
UMANG’s Impromptu Photoshoot

Talk about friendship goals! These pictures from the UMANG sports camp showcase some seriously adorable kid energy. During a break, these young girls were practically bouncing with excitement to get their picture taken. And boy, did they deliver! But what really gets me is the unfiltered affection in their expressions. The way these girls look at each other? It’s the kind of heartwarming friendship that makes you go ‘aww’ out loud. I mean, who wouldn’t want someone to look at them with that much love and admiration? I mean, if someone looked at me the way these girls gaze at their friends, I’d probably melt into a puddle of happiness.
Tigers playing hide and seek

No Sawai Madhopur story is complete without the celebrity of our town – Ranthambore National Park. I finally ticked it off my bucket list this winter, and it was a feast for the eyes. The park pulled out all the stops – I saw everything! Well, almost everything. I even stumbled upon a family of tigers. Did I capture this National Geographic moment on camera? Well, let’s just say my ‘living in the moment’ excuse sounds better than admitting I fumbled with my phone while a sea of excited tourists played paparazzi and blocked my view. If you’re ever in the area, Ranthambore is a must-visit. But fair warning: spotting that tiger family is like winning the wildlife lottery. If luck smiles on you and you snag that perfect tiger family portrait, send me a pic, will you? I promise to only be mildly green with envy!
Stories etched in palm lines

This close-up of hands is one of my favorite captures. Though you can’t see her face, these hands tell a story of resilience. Her journey weaves through challenges that would overwhelm many, yet she stands tall, choosing courage each day. Looking at these palms, I’m struck by a thought: everything we aspire to achieve is within our grasp. Our fate, our choices, our battles – they are all in our hands, quite literally. These hands, with their unique lines and contours, remind me that our true character isn’t written on our palms, but crafted by our choices and perseverance. In her quiet determination, I see a reflection of all that this Fellowship has taught me about resilience and hope.
Serene sunsets in Madhopur

I was never one to swoon over sunsets. I’ve always been a sunrise fan, even dragging my friends along to catch the sunrise on the beach a few times. But Madhopur sunsets? They’ve actually grown on me. They’re actually quite something. After long, exhausting days in the field, these views just make everything better. They’ve become something I eagerly anticipate, though I still struggle to truly capture their beauty – my camera’s just not doing them justice!
Sweet Farewells

My final day at the office was spent with these wonderful Forum Theatre kids who quickly became an integral part of my Fellowship experience. From the beginning, they played a crucial role in helping me acclimate to my new environment, offering a warmth and ease that made the transition smoother than I could have hoped. So, when it was time to say goodbye, I couldn’t bear those pouty faces. ‘What’ll cheer you up?’ I asked. Their choice? Ice cream! When I returned with the icy treats, suddenly, my leaving didn’t seem so gloomy – at least not with brain freeze to distract them. And of course, we had to immortalize this sweet moment. After all, what better way to remember our bond than with ice cream-smeared smiles?
Lasting impressions
As I flip through these photographs, I’m amazed at how each one captures a story of growth, connection, and the beauty of embracing the unknown. They are not just snapshots; they are windows into a world where cultural immersion led to both professional growth and personal discovery. And just like that, my fellowship journey comes to an end. Who knew ten months could feel like a lifetime and a blink of an eye all at once? From ‘What have I gotten myself into?’ to ‘How can I possibly leave?’, this visual diary tracks my evolution from a wide-eyed newcomer to a chai-chugging, ‘sab badiya‘-saying Sawai Madhopur enthusiast.
More than anything, I’ve realized this Fellowship wasn’t about what it could give me or what I could give back. It was about what I could learn – from every person, every challenge, and every unexpected encounter. As I close this chapter, I can’t help but feel grateful. For the challenges that pushed me, the people who supported me, and even the cows who judged me. I am grateful for the uncertainty that started it all and the invaluable insights and cherished memories I am taking with me.
So, here’s to the unexpected, the unforgettable, and the unplanned! Sawai Madhopur, you have been one heck of a teacher. You will always have a place in my heart and my photo gallery. Until we meet again!
