Discovering My Purpose
Growing up in the embrace of Kerala, my aspirations extend far beyond conventional education. I envision a school not bound by walls, where learning transcends textbooks, intertwining with nature’s teachings, literary wonders, cinematic narratives, and the exchange of ideas among individuals. This vision fuels my continuous quest for diverse experiences, leading me through different fellowships, organizational engagements, and dialogues with individuals from varied backgrounds. It’s an ongoing journey, seeking a rich, multi-dimensional understanding of education and human connections, all laying the groundwork for the envisioned educational paradigm.
A Journey with AIF: The Selection Mail
July 13 became a landmark day in my quest for purposeful learning. When the email from AIF revealed my selection as a fellow, I couldn’t contain my elation. Reading that I was placed in Auroville sparked immense excitement – it was like a dream come true. Auroville, with its ethos of sustainability and innovation, felt like the perfect match for my aspirations.
This news was a guiding light, steering me toward a journey that aligned seamlessly with my vision of creating an all-encompassing educational space. It was an invitation to immerse myself in a place where my hunger for diverse experiences and connections would thrive, fueling my commitment to learn, serve, and lead. That moment marked the beginning of an incredible chapter, propelling me into the heart of Auroville’s vibrant community.
Finding a Home by the Ocean
Settling into Auroville was akin to rediscovering a lost haven. I reside in the renowned Repos community, once adorned with over forty houses that stood testament to human resilience against the ocean’s relentless tides. Today, only a handful remain, four solitary houses standing firm against the ocean’s persistent embrace. Living in such close proximity to the ocean has become an intrinsic part of my existence. I’m merely footsteps away from the water’s edge, where the ebb and flow of the tides narrate their timeless tale.
Initially, the ocean’s embrace was overwhelming, the vibrations of the waves resonating through my dwelling, lulling me to sleep. Over time, it became my sanctuary, the caretaker of Repos assuming the role of an elder brother, his wisdom and generosity shaping my Auroville experience. He entrusted me with his bike, a symbol of camaraderie and kindness, a gesture that resonates with the ethos of Auroville—sharing, caring, and nurturing bonds beyond boundaries.
My home here by the ocean is not just a shelter; it’s a sanctuary for rejuvenation. Whenever fatigue creeps in, this space offers solace, a cocoon of healing where I recharge my spirit amidst the symphony of nature. From my doorstep, the ocean unveils its daily spectacle: dolphins frolicking in the morning sun, fishing boats setting sail at dawn, the canvas of the sky painted with breathtaking sunrises, flocks of birds winging their way back home at sunset, and the ever-changing hues of the ocean mirroring the shifting seasons.
In these moments, as the sun gently kisses my cheeks with its morning warmth, and the rhythmic sounds of the ocean orchestrate a symphony of tranquility, I find gratitude in the simple yet profound beauty that surrounds me. This picturesque setting, a backdrop to my journey in Auroville, infuses each day with a sense of awe and wonder, grounding me in the sublime embrace of nature.
Acclimatizing to Auroville and My Host Organization
Auroville’s ethos and the project I’m engaged in at the Social Entrepreneurship Association resonate deeply with my aspirations. ‘The Green Silk Road‘ project, focused on sustainable overland journeys between India and Europe, mirrors life’s journey—a confluence of cultural exchange and transformative education. Understanding the organization’s vision and integrating into its initiatives became an immersive experience, aligning seamlessly with my learning goals. Gijs Spoor, my supervisor, embodies this ethos, fostering a collaborative, flexible environment that nurtures growth, mutual respect, and intellectual exchange.
Embracing Human Connections
In the vibrant tapestry of Auroville, every human interaction contributes to a richer understanding of this diverse community. From hitchhiking encounters during bike rides to heartfelt conversations, each moment broadens my perspective. Documenting these invaluable connections within an Airtable tab named ‘Human Connect’ has become a visual testament to the depth and diversity of human experiences within Auroville. Through this record, I weave the stories of chance meetings and intentional gatherings, like inviting Kuppaswamy and Raj guru, both esteemed locals, for enriching teas by the ocean. Each person in this intricate web of connections adds a unique thread to the narrative, shaping the collective growth and spirit of this extraordinary place.
Encountering the Swiss family, Peter, Celine, and their three kids, became an enchanting chapter in my Auroville journey. Communicating through Google Translate, playful actions, and infectious smiles, we connected effortlessly. Engaging with the kids, celebrating Diwali together, and eventually inviting them to my home in Kerala was a cherished experience. Over four days, we explored forests, chased waterfalls, crafting unforgettable memories. Their departure to Namibia to build their dream school marked the bittersweet end of our time together—a testament to the profound impact of fleeting yet profound connections.
Engaging with Auroville’s Communities
Beyond the confines of my host organization, engaging with Auroville’s vibrant communities has been enlightening. Active participation in YouthLink, Sadhana Forest, the library, SAVI Volunteer Forum, Free Store, and Solar Kitchen has provided a multifaceted view of Auroville’s ethos. These engagements, each unique and insightful, contribute to a holistic understanding of the community’s dynamics and aspirations.
Documenting the Journey
Navigating this transformative journey in Auroville involves not only immersion but also meticulous documentation. Professionally, I’ve embraced tools like the GSR CRM sheets, meticulously updating and organizing information vital to the Green Silk Road project. On a more personal level, my endeavor to connect with fellow humans finds a home in Airtable. Aptly titled ‘Human Connect,’ it’s a testament to the rich tapestry of encounters and relationships forged here. Moreover, my Instagram story highlights, ‘auro stories’ serve as a vibrant canvas, capturing vivid moments and reflections, allowing me to share the essence of this profound expedition with a broader audience.
In addition, I initiated a Hylo community called ‘Auroville Welcome Drink.’ This platform serves as a bridge between Auroville residents and visitors, fostering connections and collaboration. As hosts extend hospitality, offering guidance and shared exploration, it becomes a gateway for guests to co-travel, explore, and connect with shared goals.
