For years, my devotion to coffee remained unwavering, occupying an unchanging place in my life for as long as I can remember. From the moment I entered college, coffee became an integral part of my daily routine. It was my morning catalyst, the go-to solace during free hours and the reliable buddy during examinations. I often lost track of the count of cups I consumed. It functioned as a stress buster and a means to escape the pressures of college life but soon evolved into an unhealthy dependence. After completing my Masters, I decided to cut off coffee to break free from its addictive grip that had held me for years. Little did I know that this decision to bid farewell to coffee was brewing a new beginning.
The Unexpected Beginning with Chai

My journey with chai (tea) unfolded during the initial days of my Fellowship at the host organisation. I was offered chai on my first day and I politely declined it. As a former coffee person, I grappled with doubt, questioning whether chai was the right fit for me. I harboured the fear that it might end as disappointingly as my relationship with coffee. However, my colleagues went the extra mile to make a cup for me and this time, I decided to give it a shot. The first sip revealed a subtle hint of ginger and a sweet note. While it may not have been bad, it was undeniably distinct. Driven by the voice at the back of my head that said this experience might be unique, I wanted to try it again.
Surprisingly, with each passing day and a few more cups, this seemingly unfamiliar taste became a soothing constant, enveloping me with its cosiness. It helped me ease into the environment and often accompanied me in heartfelt conversations. What began as a way to try something new evolved into a delightful discovery of chai’s inherent goodness. In those moments, I found myself falling in love with chai and ever since it has become a cherished companion that brings joy in the rhythm of my life.
Brewing reflections

Upon reflecting, I realised that my relationship with coffee has been tumultuous. Despite my fondness for it, it led to numerous sleepless nights. Moreover, my refusal to venture beyond coffee got me entangled with it as it became a coping mechanism to deal with the pressures of everyday life. Strangely, I was more stressed while sipping on coffee, a realization that only dawned on me later. I persistently tried to make it work even when it became clear it wasn’t, resulting in a bittersweet goodbye. The need for change and adopting it seemed daunting. All the while, I was not only rejecting new experiences but also limiting myself from being happy. Now, as I unabashedly slurp on my chai, life feels a little uncomplicated. It doesn’t dictate my day nor keep me awake but offers me genuine joy and freedom. It gives me a sense of hope that despite uncertainties things will eventually fall into place. With chai, I discovered that happiness can be found even in the simplest things.
A life lesson in every sip
As I savour this journey from a dedicated coffee enthusiast to a chai lover, I recognise that chai has been more than just a delightful beverage. It has been a silent mentor, subtly unveiling a profound truth about life – that embracing change is a necessary part of our existence and how being open to it can enrich life’s journey.

Adding to that, my newfound affection for chai does not diminish my appreciation for coffee. I hold no regrets for my choices instead I am grateful, as they have paved the way for a joyful present and the promise of a hopeful future. This serves as a reminder that sometimes, letting go is essential to create space for better things to come. It is about appreciating that life’s richness lies in its diverse flavours and experiences.
Therefore, dear readers, fear not, for change is not the end but the beginning of something new. It can be sweet and comforting only if we allow ourselves to welcome it. While it is not an easy feat and can be intimidating, the beauty of new experiences gradually unfolds with each step we take. After all, change is the only constant. For all I know, it may be worth it just like a cup of chai!
