- Adults with disabilities in India often face significant barriers in accessing workforce opportunities.
- AIF offers innovative programs for individuals with disabilities, focusing on reskilling and upskilling to empower them beyond traditional career expectations.
- AIF collaborates with corporations to ensure that individuals with disabilities are recognized and valued for their contributions, helping to shift the narrative from limitation to possibility.

AIF’s programs for adults with disabilities not only promote participation. but also foster independence and change societal perceptions of their value in the workforce.
Despite increased awareness and support for individuals with disabilities in India, systemic barriers and limited resources continue to leave these members of society by the wayside. Adults with disabilities often face challenges that limit their participation in the workforce, underscoring the need for innovative solutions. Now more than ever, programs for individuals with disabilities need to be not just available, but transformational. The American India Foundation (AIF) recognizes this need and has developed programs that facilitate more than just their participation–they challenge societal norms and redefine what’s possible for these individuals.
Empowering Through Innovation: AIF’s Ability Based Livelihood Empowerment Program (ABLE) aims to create pathways for Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) to secure sustainable jobs while promoting an overall ecosystem of inclusion and growth in the workforce. ABLE upskills and trains adults with disabilities, enabling them to pursue career opportunities beyond traditional expectations. Take, for example, 31-year-old G.B. Karthik from Chennai. At the age of 11, an accident left him with a locomotor disability, impacting his ability to walk. While the accident changed the course of his life and presented unrelenting challenges, it could not stop the confident and optimistic Karthik from wanting to find a career on his own terms. Through AIF’s Project SAMEIP under the ABLE program, Karthik gained the skills and support he needed to excel. Today, he works as a Finance Associate at Wells Fargo Bank.
Redefining Workforce Inclusion: The impact of AIF’s programs extends beyond individual transformation. AIF partners with various corporations to ensure workforce inclusion through programs for adults with disabilities. By creating awareness around what it takes to foster proactively inclusionary workplaces, AIF is helping to change perceptions of their value in the workforce, encouraging wider societal and economic inclusion. Through skills training, these programs prepare adults with disabilities for integration into the workforce and encourage employers and coworkers alike to focus on their capabilities–rather than their limitations. Di-verse, the first and only Disability Inclusion Certification for corporates in India, was incubated by AIF for that very purpose–to foster social impact and advance the financial inclusion of individuals with disabilities in the workforce.

Advocating for a More Inclusive Workforce:
AIF’s work in creating opportunities for Persons with Disabilities is not just about changing lives; it’s about reshaping society. You can be part of this change and help AIF continue its mission to build a more inclusive India, where everyone has the chance to thrive.
