Have you ever taken a trip that completely changes how you see the world? AIF’s India Mission Trip (IMT) is exactly that! AIF’s Mission Trips are authentic, immersive experiences that enable participants to witness firsthand the incredible social change happening in India, while creating a growing community of globally-minded changemakers connecting the civil societies of the US and India. Over the past two decades, the AIF Mission Trip has established a benchmark in experiential, impact-focused travel by curating unforgettable and transformative visits to our program communities.
If you’re looking to understand the challenges faced by communities and witness their resilience in overcoming these challenges, this experience might be apt for you.
Here are five things you’ll take away from AIF’s India Mission Trip:
1. A Front-Row Seat to Social Change in India
The Mission Trip is designed for an intimate group of 10-15 participants who are executives, philanthropists, investors, and leaders. The IMT guarantees a deep dive into grassroots social impact in India, be it the crowded streets of Delhi, spiritual ghats of Varanasi, or rural heartlands of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Participants have the opportunity to visit schools where AIF’s LAMP and Digital Equalizer (DE) programs are supporting adolescent girls who are constantly breaking barriers and where social issues are a shared dialogue between adolescent boys and girls, experience livelihood programs that empower communities, and meet healthcare champions improving maternal and child health. In this manner, participants get firsthand experience of social impact at the grassroots level.
2. Experiential Travel Where Every Meal Tells a Story
Along with helping participants witness the social change brought about by AIF, IMT curates an experiential trip that supports community-run cafés and women-led enterprises. All participants get to dine at these places and learn how food, culture, and economic empowerment intersect. These experiences also showcase how a simple meal can be a symbol of dignity and progress for women at the grassroots level.
3. Conversations with Changemakers
Another crucial component of IMT is seeing community engagement in action. Participants hear stories from educators, healthcare workers, artisans, and grassroots leaders while witnessing how AIF’s work shapes futures through education, skilling, or public health. They interact with beneficiaries and get a glimpse of what it is to be involved in social impact. One such incident is recalled by Harit Talwar, Co-Chair of AIF from their February 2024 IMT. Harit recalls, when they visited a government school in Odisha’s Ganjam district to experience AIF’s STEM pedagogy-focused Digital Equalizer program (DE). They saw an energetic group of 9th graders displaying the drones they had built, discussing Block Coding, Robotics, AI, and Machine Learning, and showcased their cutting-edge projects created using these concepts. What shined was their confidence, knowledge, and pride in their creations. These are the essential life skills that the program equips the students with. The excitement of young Jamuna who wants to become a space engineer; Mitali, who has her sights set on being an astronaut; and Anjali, who has clear ambitions of becoming a space doctor. (Yes, everyone had to google the last one and so should you.) DE unlocked their dreams and gave them the language to articulate their talents and goals. Harit exclaims, “It is moments like this that reminds us of the life-changing power of AIF’s work and the true impact of donor dollars”.
4. Local Treasures and Untold Stories
IMT isn’t just about AIF’s life-changing work. It’s also about exploring natural beauty, history, and culture. The locations are selected so that participants get the best of everything, such as majestic forts, vibrant local markets, and heritage sites, all guided by locals who help them experience India beyond just the tourist hotspots.
5. A New Perspective on the World (And Themselves)
The immersive IMT experience is designed to help participants experience personal growth and transformation and return to their worlds with stories, connections, and purpose. By engaging with people who help bring about change at the grassroots, participants have the opportunity to reflect on their own roles in creating social change and championing equity within their communities back home.
In the words of Harit Talwar, Co-Chair, AIF: “The IMT is truly food for the soul. Visiting different parts of India, seeing AIF STEM workshops in remote villages, hearing about the work and aspirations of young girls and boys who literally aim for the planets is overwhelmingly inspiring. To see AIF workshops in tribal areas aiming to reduce infant mortality rates through neonatal care and sex health education for girls AND boys fills one with hope and optimism. The can-do attitude of these young kids and also of the AIF staff is mesmerizing. Anyone who doesn’t take these trips is missing the opportunity of a lifetime.”
