"I will never forget the moment I entered the Biliamba School in Dang, Surat, Gujarat."

Together with my American India Foundation (AIF) colleagues from both the US and India, we were welcomed by students and staff with a full sensory spectacle of traditional dance, drums, song, food, and drink. While I was moved to joyous tears by the community’s hospitality, the beaming smiles of the young schoolgirl dancers, and the heartfelt remarks of teachers and students alike, it was what followed that punctuated the importance of this place.

A Newborn's Lifesaver

“We could not understand how critical the baby was. It was the timely intervention of Sahiya didi and MANSI that saved my child’s life.”

Sahiya Sumitra Mahato realized that her role as a community health worker became even more critical during the pandemic. She understood that the training to save the lives of mothers and children, which she had received under AIF’s MANSI, would be called upon now more than ever in the remote and impoverished tribal village of Merelgara, West Singbhum, Jharkhand.

Against the Odds

“I want to be a teacher when I grow up and spread the joy of learning within my community.”

Sunitabai Pawara beams with pride as her 11-year-old son Aditya shares his dream of becoming a teacher. She is euphoric that Aditya does not have to live a childhood devoid of education. Since becoming a part of AIF’s Learning and Migration Program (LAMP), he, along with so many other children in the village Mungabari, Nandurbar, Maharashtra, has access to quality education.
