Shrunothra Ambati is a senior at the Advanced Math and Science Academy in Marlborough, Massachusetts. She participated in the first-ever LAMP Crowdfunding Campaign that was held in New England in 2014. She was one of the top fundraisers (raised over $3,000 in just three weeks). She has inspired so many young people out there to engage with the LAMP program.
AIF recently interviewed Shrunothra to find out more about her passion for LAMP:
How were you successful in raising so much funds for LAMP during the first campaign?
I had a lot of support from my family and friends. I reached out to a lot of people, and I also utilized my parents’ networks. Together we had many contacts and I was able to reach more people who were willing to donate. It is about being persistent and showing people why you care about the cause. You need to show your passion and commitment and I found that many people were willing to support me when they saw how much I cared about LAMP.
What inspires you to support LAMP?
I truly believe that education is a right that everyone should have access to. Seeing all the videos, reading all the stories, and hearing all the work that is being done for the children in India inspired me to also try to help as much as I could. I know there’s still a long way to go, and as a student myself, I identify with the cause. I want other children to have the same opportunities that I have.
Why is education so important in a young person’s life?
Education paves the way for future success and enables you to do much more than you thought you could. The process of learning and discovery is something that every child should get to experience, and I am so lucky to study in America where I have consistent schooling. Education gives you control and power over your own life and enables you to make informed decisions. It is the first step in improving your quality of life. In the past few years, I have taken many classes that have expanded my imagination and opened up thousands of possibilities for me. There are so many brilliant young minds around the world; they just have to be given a chance to explore and learn.
What are you hoping to accomplish in the new Light a LAMP campaign this year?
I hope that we can convey the importance of education to everyone. It plays a crucial role in making things better for yourself and others. I want even more people to participate in the Light a LAMP campaign than last year so that we spread awareness and show the world that making education available to everyone should be a priority.
Why should other people out there take part in the new Light a LAMP campaign?
Education sparks creativity, wonder, and curiosity – all drivers of innovation, and that is how progress is made. Future generations all around the world need these qualities and LAMP can help enable this. As the world becomes an increasingly interconnected place, we need to all help up those who do not have the chances and fortunate circumstances as the rest of us. Each person deserves to quench their thirst for knowledge, and the LAMP campaign is making a difference in this area of many children’s lives.
